Returning a Camper: Cleaning, Fuel Rules & More

Tips for returning a campervan rental

βœ… Last Update: Jan 21, 2026 @ 8:05 am

So, your New Zealand road trip is wrapping up. It’s almost time to return the camper β€” but wait! Before you roll into the depot and toss the keys, there are a few things you need to know.

  • Returning a camper doesn’t have to be stressful. Here’s a simple guide to keep things smooth, clean, and chill.

🧼 Keep It Clean (But Don’t Go Overboard)

Campervan companies don’t expect you to return the van sparkling like a hotel room β€” but they do want it reasonably tidy.

What to do:

  • Throw out all your rubbish β€” food, wrappers, coffee cups… everything.
  • Wipe the surfaces β€” especially the kitchen and table area.
  • Sweep or vacuum if there’s sand, crumbs, or dirt.
  • Clean out the fridge β€” no one wants to find your leftover cheese.
  • Empty the toilet and grey water tanks if your van is self-contained (you’ll find dump stations all over NZ).

πŸ‘‰ Some companies offer a paid cleaning option. If you’re short on time or energy, just ask!

Cleaning tips

β›½ Fuel Up Before You Say Goodbye

Most companies ask you to return the camper with a full tank of fuel. Some also want the LPG gas bottle full (the one you used for cooking).

What to check:

  • Fill up petrol or diesel near the drop-off point. Keep the receipt.
  • Refill the LPG bottle if needed. Some places don’t require this, so check your rental agreement.

🚐 If you forget, they’ll refill it for you β€” but charge you a fee (and it’s not cheap).

⏰ Be On Time (Or Let Them Know)

Return times usually fall between 9 AM and 4 PM. If you’re late, they might charge you for another day.

Got a flight? Always allow:

  • Time to fuel up
  • Time to clean
  • Time for the van inspection
  • Time to catch your airport shuttle (if offered)

πŸ“ž Running late? Just call them. Kiwi companies are often friendly and chill if you keep them in the loop.

Timing tips

βœ… Quick Vehicle Check: No Surprises, Please

When you return the van, staff will do a quick inspection. They’re looking for:

  • New dents or scratches
  • Interior damage
  • Anything missing

Take photos when you drop off the van β€” just in case. It’s always better to have proof if something comes up later.

Β

If you bought insurance, you’re probably sweet β€” but always double-check what it covers.

πŸŒ™ After-Hours Drop-Off? Here's How

Some depots let you return the van outside business hours. Usually, you:

  • Park in the right spot
  • Lock the van
  • Drop the keys in a secure box

But remember: you’re still responsible until someone checks it the next day β€” so don’t skip the fuel and tidy-up.
